Who is Nesta Howells? A look at Frank Bough's loyal wife

The loyal wife who stood by Frank Bough to the end: Presenter dies after 61 years of marriage to Nesta Howells who stayed with him despite two VERY public sex and drug scandals after deciding they were ‘nothing personal’

  • Former BBC broadcaster Frank Bough died in care home last Wednesday, age 86
  • Leaves behind wife Nesta Howells and three sons – David, Stephen and Andrew
  • Nesta stood by her husband despite the sex scandal which hit tabloids in 1988

While a torrent of damaging sex and drug revelations resulted in viewers turning their backs on former BBC broadcaster Frank Bough, there was one person who remained loyal until the very end – his wife, Nesta Howells.

The Grandstand host, who died in a care home last Wednesday, aged 87, was one of the country’s highest-paid broadcasters for much of his career – on a reputed £200,000 salary.

However, in 1988, a year after he left Breakfast Time to become the presenter of the BBC’s Holiday programme, he was sacked by the Corporation after a red-top Sunday newspaper revealed he had taken cocaine with prostitutes at a Mayfair brothel.

Despite two public sex and drug scandals which affected his future career, Nesta continued to stand by her husband – even going so far as to express her disgust at the press.

‘Everybody has a sex life and a sexuality and that should generally stay within the confines of the family,’ she said. ‘These newspapers are dismantling and destroying institutions and people and for what? How much further do we have to go before there is some control?’

Frank Bough met Nesta at a dance while he was doing his national service in the Royal Tank Regiment.

Nesta, a Welsh physiotherapist, was working at the military base Park Hall Camp, near Oswestry at the time.

They tied the knot after Frank left the army in 1959 and opted to honeymoon in Switzerland – after deciding their first choice of the Scilly Isles was out of their price range.

The couple went on to have three sons together – David, Stephen and Andrew – who lead lives away from the public eye.

However, Frank’s dalliances with cocaine and prostitutes shocked viewers who knew him as a clean-cut family figure who donned a variation of comfy patterned jumpers.

Amid a torrent of more damaging revelations, Frank attempted to stop further speculation by giving an ill-advised interview to the now-defunct News of the World  in an attempt to protect his marriage and spare his children humiliation.

In a grovelling mea culpa, he confessed to snorting cocaine with escort girls and drug-pushers and to watching couples have sex at wild parties, though he insisted the drug made him unable to have sex himself.

He added he’d been lured into the world of high-class prostitutes after being introduced to a French-born vice queen.

He insisted: ‘I’m not a wicked man, nor do I mean any harm or evil to people. I’ve made mistakes, but everyone’s entitled to do that. No one suffered but my wife, my family and myself.

‘It was a brief but appalling period in my life. Don’t condemn my entire career for a brief episode I regret.’

He then claimed a therapist had cured him of his cocaine habit and his ‘other life’ – ‘for good’.

Despite his public shame, Nesta, a physiotherapist, stood by him – but admitted to being angry and that she did contemplate leaving him.

Speaking in a Sky News programme, she said: ‘Obviously I have thought, ‘Do I stay or do I go?’.

‘We have been together a long time. We have brought up a family. We have still got a lot going for us. I do feel betrayed by it, but I do not feel that it is anything personal to do with me.’

When the scandal died down, Frank resumed his career and was recruited by LWT to present its show Six O’Clock Live and then ITV’s Rugby World Cup coverage.

However, in 1992, more deeply embarrassing tabloid revelations were to follow after he was photographed leaving a sado-masochistic vice den. He was said to have spent 50 minutes in a ‘torture chamber’ featuring a slave cage and school canes.

The next day he went on TV with his wife and said shamefacedly: ‘I am feeling exceedingly stupid. I bitterly regret many of the things in my life, and if only I could undo them I would.’

He then went on to present a show on a London talk radio station, before disappearing from the public eye in 1996.

For the best part of 20 years, Frank and Nesta chose to live in reclusive obscurity, but he stepped back into the limelight when he decided to appear in a BBC2 documentary looking back at the 1983 launch of breakfast television which saw him anchor the BBC’s Breakfast Time.

He died in October 2020 at a care home at the age of 87.

His career began in 1964 when he presented the show Sportsview, taking over from Peter Dimmock.

During this week’s episode, Dale goes to see Clare, and they end up spending time together.

When the guys go to find Dale and Clare, he jokes about hiding in the closet.

The guys then stage what appears to be a walk-out, sharing that they wanted more from The Bachelorette star, and they don’t want to compete with a guy who has seemingly already won.

Who is Wilton Gregory? Pope Francis appoints America's first black cardinal

WILTON Gregory is set to become America's first black cardinal on November 28.

Pope Francis made the announcement at the Vatican on October 25, elevating 13 clergymen to cardinal status.

Who is Wilton Gregory?

Wilton Gregory is the only black Archbishop in the United States.

Since 2005, he had led the Archdiocese of Atlanta, before being appointed Archbishop of Washington, DC in 2019.

Gregory is known for guiding the Catholic church through its clergy sexual abuse crisis in the early 2000s.

He is also an advocate for LGBTQ Catholics.

When will he become a cardinal to the Pope?

Speaking following his Angelus prayer from St. Peter's Square in Vatican City on October 25, Pope Francis appointed Gregory as America's first black cardinal.

Archbishop Gregory is one of 13 to be elevated to the rank at a surprise consistory or ceremony.

Francis said the churchmen would be elevated to a cardinal’s rank on November 28.

Francis asked for prayers so the new cardinals “may help me in my ministry as bishop of Rome for the good of all God’s faithful holy people.”

Gregory said in a statement that becoming a cardinal would allow him to work more closely with the pontiff in caring for the Catholic Church.

Francis DeBernardo told The Associated Press that choosing Gregory for a cardinal’s post signals Francis wants “LGBTQ people to be part of the church, and he wants church people to respect them.”

Who are Pope Francis's cardinals?

Other new cardinals include:

  • An Italian who is the long-time papal preacher at the Vatican, the Rev. Raniero Cantalamessa, who is a Franciscan friar;
  • The Kigali, Rwanda, Archbishop Antoine Kambanda
  • The Capiz, Philippines, Archbishop Jose Fuerte Advincula
  • The Santiago, Chile, Archbishop Celestino Aos Braco.

Nine of the new cardinals are younger than 80-years-old.

No details have been provided by the Vatican about how the ceremony will happen in light of coronavirus precautions and travel restrictions.

Gregory is the only American to have been appointed the honor.

Who is Matthew Koma? Hilary Duff’s husband

In October 2020, Hilary Duff announced that she was pregnant by sharing a video of her husband Matthew Koma embracing her baby bump, writing, “We are growing!!! Mostly me.” Koma joked, “lol quarantine was fun. Baby #3 – 2021.” This is the couple’s second child together. The Lizzie McGuire alum has a son named Luca, who she shares with her first husband Mike Comrie.

Duff and Koma welcomed a daughter named Banks Violet Bair in October 2018. Koma’s given name is actually Matthew Bair, per Insider. The Long Island native is a singer-songwriter and music producer, who met Duff in the recording studio when they worked on her 2015 album Breathe In. Breathe Out, per Us Weekly. He’s also worked with Zedd, Kelly Clarkson, Tiësto, Britney Spears, Bruce Springsteen, and Carly Rae Jepsen, who he dated in 2013, according to E! News.

In addition to collaborating with other artists on their songs, Koma has released his own music, including a song called “Dear Ana,” which is about his struggles with anorexia. In 2017, Koma told People, “At the time I had just started going through the realization that I’d spent many years in a very unhealthy relationship with food and battling different versions of eating disorders, and I’d never really spoken it out loud or talked about it,” until writing the song.

Both together and separately, Koma and Duff have been through a lot.

Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma have dated more than once

Hilary Duff met Matthew Koma while working on her album in 2015, one year after her split from Mike Comrie, according to Us Weekly. For the record, they were just friends at first, going public with their romance in 2017. However, their relationship wasn’t exactly smooth sailing. During a December 2017 appearance on The Talk, Duff admitted (via Us Weekly), “I mean, this is the third time that we’ve dated.”

Duff explained, “I think that you have history and a past with someone and love, and just because it doesn’t work out the first time, the second time, as long as there’s not too much damage done, then, it can always work out again.” They seemingly stayed together since their third go at a romance, announcing their engagement on Instagram in May 2019. Just Jared reported that they tied the knot in December 2019 with a backyard ceremony at their home in Los Angeles.

Koma further solidified their relationship by getting “Hilary” tattooed on his butt cheek in September 2020, joking on Instagram, “Good luck winning a fight with your wife when her name’s tattooed on your butt cheek.” That’s a unique take on commitment, that’s for sure.

Adorable kitten who suffered burns to his face makes miraculous recovery

Contains graphic images.

An adorable kitten who suffered horrific burns in a fire has made a miracle recovery after being adopted by the veterinary nurse who saved him.

The seven-week-old animal was rescued by police officers who spotted him lying in the road near a bonfire.

He was taken to Pride Veterinary Centre in Derby where he was given a slim chance of survival last month.

But after an operation to save his eye and dress his wounds, the kitten survived.

Veterinary nurse Jenni Gretton was so taken with him, she started an online campaign to raise money for his treatment.

After just six hours of launching the campaign, wellwishers donated £2,000 to cover his vet’s bills.

Jenni, 32, has now adopted the kitten, who she has named ‘Fire Cat’ after no one came forward to claim him.

The mum-of-one has to cover Fire Cat’s feet in cling film to help them heal and moisturises his eyes several times a day so they don’t dry out.

Jenni, from Mickelover, Derby, said: ‘He smelled of burnt hair because he was singed. All of his fur was charred and his ears and whiskers were burnt.

‘All of the skin on his face was burnt and his eyes were really quite singed. His ears were clinging over the top and he was really sore.

‘He looked worse a few days later when the skin started to peel off – the skin on his face peeled away after a few days.’

Fire Cat was put on fluids and vets were unsure whether he would survive.

‘It was difficult to know whether to carry on with treatment or not. We decided to try,’ added Jenni.

‘We were really unsure at that point what to do because we had never seen a kitten that had been so badly burnt before.

‘We knew there was a high risk of him getting an infection or not being able to breathe properly and we knew how much pain he was in.

‘But we wanted to give him a chance, so we started treatment starting with pain relief.

‘His eyes were really burnt. I flushed his eyes out and cleaned his face to see how bad his injuries were.

‘His lips were burnt away right to his teeth.’

Over the next few days, Fire Cat started doing better. But after no one came forward to claim him, Jenni adopted him.

She added: ‘We still don’t know who his owners were, what happened to him or whether it was malicious or not.

‘I took him home after seven days and his hair started falling off.

‘I was bathing him throughout the day and putting vaseline on his wounds. His skin fell off his face, nose, and nostrils.’

The cat now lives with Jenni, her husband Phil Gretton, 42, and their two-year-old son Jude who gave the kitty his name.

‘Fire Cat fitted in straight away at home and plays with our Cavalier cross breeds, Harvey and Ringo,’ said Jenni.

‘He is really happy and really bright. He is just like a normal kitten except that he looks different.

‘I didn’t think he would get his hair back but it is growing back. He’s too young to go outside and won’t be going out for a while.’

17 Celebrities Who Have Bravely Shared About Their Miscarriages

These famous moms want to end the stigma surrounding pregnancy loss.

Every year, thousands of people experience an incredibly devastating miscarriage and while pregnancy loss can seem isolating, those that go through it are not alone.

While talking about the experience may have been considered taboo in the past, people are increasingly sharing their stories in order to dispel misinformation surrounding the subject and help those in the same painful situation.

As October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, we have compiled some celebrities’ candid experiences about their own miscarriage.

Hear their emotional stories below…

1. Chrissy Teigen

Chrissy Teigen and her husband John Legend recently opened up about the heartbreaking loss of their son Jack. Chrissy had been on bed rest for two weeks before being hospitalized for severe bleeding due to complications from a weak placenta. Unfortunately, doctors were not able to stop the bleeding and get Jack the fluids he needed.

“We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before… To our Jack—I’m so sorry that the first few moments of your life were met with so many complications, that we couldn’t give you the home you needed to survive. We will always love you,” Chrissy wrote in an Instagram post.

Her emotional post was met with thousands of supportive comments from famous friends, family and fans.

2. Kate Beckinsale

Kate Beckinsale showed her support for Chrissy Teigen by sharing the story of her own miscarriage when she was five months pregnant.

“Years ago, I lost a baby at 20 weeks. I had managed to keep my pregnancy quiet and I absolutely collapsed inside and no one would have known. There is grief, shame and shock so often that come with an experience like this, plus the heartbreak of your body continuing, after the loss, to act as if it had a child to nurture. Your milk comes in, with no one to feed. It can be the loneliest, most soul destroying period of time, particularly if you are not in the position of having an emotionally connected, supportive partner like Chrissy has,” Kate wrote on her Instagram.

She continued, “Sending so much love to the Legend family, but also so much to the women and couples who have kept it quiet and suffered. I know there are so many. Thank you @chrissyteigen for making sure it is abundantly clear how devastating this is, and how life changing it can be without support.”

3. Hilaria Baldwin

In 2019, Hilaria Baldwin sadly suffered two miscarriages. In an effort to raise awareness about the topic and help others in the same situation, Hilaria shared her experience on both occasions.

“I have always been so open with you all about my family, fitness, pregnancies… and I don’t want to keep this from you, just because it isn’t as positive and shiny as the rest. I think it’s important to show the truth…because my job is to help people by being real and open. Furthermore, I have no shame or embarrassment with this experience. I want to be a part of the effort to normalize miscarriage and remove the stigma from it,” Hilaria wrote on her Instagram.

Thankfully, Hilaria and her husband Alec went on to welcome a son, Eduardo, the following year.

4. Carrie Underwood

Carrie Underwood revealed that she suffered three miscarriages between 2017 and 2018 in an emotional interview with CBS Sunday Morning.

“I had always been afraid to be angry because we are so blessed. And my son, Isaiah, is the sweetest thing. And he’s the best thing in the world. And I’m like, ‘If we can never have any other kids, that’s okay, because he’s amazing.’ And I have this amazing life. Like, really, what can I complain about? I can’t. I have an incredible husband, incredible friends, an incredible job, an incredible kid. Can I be mad? No,” Carrie explained.

After her losses, Carrie went on to welcome son Jacob Bryan in January of 2019.

5. Beyonce

Beyonce opened up about experiencing miscarriages when she explained how her definition of success changed since beginning her journey to motherhood.

“I began to search for deeper meaning when life began to teach me lessons I didn’t know I needed. Success looks different to me now. I learned that all pain and loss is in fact a gift. Having miscarriages taught me that I had to mother myself before I could be a mother to someone else. Then I had Blue, and the quest for my purpose became so much deeper. I died and was reborn in my relationship, and the quest for self became even stronger,” Beyonce told Elle.

Tina Knowles Reminds Everyone Her Maiden Name is Actually Beyoncé

6. Shay Mitchell

Before welcoming her daughter Atlas, Shay Mitchell experienced a miscarriage, which she said blindsided her.

“I was like 14 weeks. At that point, I had no idea the percentage of miscarriages. When it happened, I was just completely blindsided by it… I know other women and other friends of mine who’ve gone through a way harder journey. It’s just really tough because you feel broken, as a woman, and that’s not a great feeling,” Shay said on her pregnancy series “Almost Ready.”

7. Kimberly Van Der Beek

Kimberly Van Der Beek and her husband James were extremely candid about the miscarriage she suffered while he was appearing on “Dancing With The Stars.” In their pregnancy announcement, James revealed that they had lost pregnancies in the past and shared that he thought the word miscarriage needed to be replaced.

“@vanderkimberly and I have been through three of those first appointments to discover either no heartbeat, or no baby, and she wanted to share this moment. Miscarriage (a word that needs a replacement – nobody failed to ‘carry’, these things sometimes just happen) is something that people rarely talk about, and often go through in secret. But there needs to be zero shame around it, or around giving yourself the time and space to grieve. We decided to put ourselves out there – not knowing what we’d find – in an effort to chip away at any senseless stigma around this experience and to encourage people who might be going through it to open themselves up to love & support from friends and family when they need it most,” James wrote on his Instagram.

Unfortunately, the following month, the couple experienced “every expecting parent’s worst nightmare” and while they were heartbroken, it brought them closer with their five children. Sadly, in 2020, James and Kimberly went through the experience again.

8. Pink

Pink opened up about losing a pregnancy while explaining the lyrics to her song “Happy” where she sings, “Since I was 17 I’ve always hated my body and it feels like my body’s hated me.”

“The reason I said [that] is because I’ve always had this very tomboy, very strong gymnast body, but actually at 17 I had a miscarriage, and I was going to have that child. But when that happens to a woman or a young girl, you feel like your body hates you and like your body is broken, and it’s not doing what it’s supposed to do. I’ve had several miscarriages since, so I think it’s important to talk about what you’re ashamed of, who you really are and the painful sh-t. I’ve always written that way,” Pink told USA Today.

9. Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow said that she experienced a scary miscarriage after welcoming her daughter Apple and son Moses.

“I had a really bad experience when I was pregnant with my third. It didn’t work out and I nearly died. So I am like, ‘Are we good here or should we go back and try again?'” the Oscar winner told the Daily Mail.

Gwyneth Paltrow Admits Co-Parenting With Chris Martin is 'Not As Good As It Looks'

10. Gabrielle Union

I’ve never felt more broken in my life. I debated sharing this so soon and I’m still frightened about making such a private struggle public, but I’m doing it anyway because it’s important. After my [surgery], I spent hours on the internet searching for women who had been through it. I was desperate to find someone, anyone, who could relate to what I was feeling. Someone to tell me that the depression and hopelessness were normal. That it wasn’t my fault. That I wasn’t broken forever,” Claire wrote on her Instagram.

Illinois police officer who fatally shot 19-year-old black man fired

An Illinois police officer who fatally shot a black teenager during a traffic stop this week has been fired, a new report said.

The unidentified officer was axed for “multiple policy and procedure violations,” over the Tuesday shooting death of 19-year-old Marcellis Stinnette in the city of Waukegan, NBC Chicago reported.

Stinnette was a passenger in a car driven by his girlfriend, Tafara Williams, 20, who was wounded in the shooting.

The officer was approaching the pair’s car when it began moving in reverse; the officer is claiming he opened fire because he was in fear of his life, the Chicago Tribune had reported.

The officer who opened fire is Hispanic, police said. No gun was found in the car.

Williams was hospitalized after having two surgeries for gunshot wounds to the abdomen and arm, her mother said.

State police, with the assistance of the FBI, are investigating the fatal shooting, the Tribune reported.
