One in six doctors catching up on their Covid backlog, survey suggests

Only one in six doctors are catching up on their backlog of treatments caused by the coronavirus lockdown, survey suggests

  • Just one in six doctors have started catching up on backlog caused by lockdown
  • More than 4.2m patients are waiting for hospital treatment and facing delays
  • A survey of over 6,000 doctors found they were not confident the NHS would cope this winter and did not have faith in the Government’s pandemic strategy

Fewer than one in six doctors have started catching up on treatment backlogs caused by the lockdown, a major survey shows.

The British Medical Association research also found that two thirds worry about how they will cope over the winter months amid high levels of stress.

More than 4.2million patients are waiting for hospital treatment, including 111,000 for longer than a year.

But the survey of 6,610 NHS doctors in England, carried out last week, found only 15 per cent had started tackling their lists.

It means the lengthy delays causing misery and distress for millions of patients are likely to get even worse over winter.

One in four doctors said they were already seeing more Covid-19 patients than during the first wave as hospital admissions surge in northern England.

Five in six said they were worried about coping with demand from patients with other health conditions, such as cancer or heart trouble.

Most said they were not confident the NHS would cope this winter and did not have faith in the Government’s pandemic strategy.

A mere 6 per cent of doctors said they believed the approach of dividing England into three ‘tiers’ with different lockdown restrictions would significantly reduce the spread of the virus.

Dr Chaand Nagpaul, chairman of the BMA, said: ‘Doctors know this winter is likely to be one of the most difficult times of their careers.

‘They are extremely worried about the ability for the NHS to cope and their ability to care for the needs of their patients.

‘Meanwhile there remains a backlog of millions of patients not receiving treatment during the first peak, and with only 15 per cent of doctors reporting that they have started to tackle the backlog, millions are still left waiting to be seen.

A survey from the British Medical Association of over 6,000 doctors found the majority were not confident the NHS would cope this winter and did not have faith in the Government’s pandemic strategy. Pictured: Clinical staff wear PPE as they care for a patient at the ICU

‘As the waiting lists continue to grow and more and more beds are needed by those with Covid, this second wave could be devastating for patients, the health and social care service and those working in it.’

The BMA is calling for the Government to be ‘honest and realistic with the public about whether the NHS can cope with routine care and Covid care this winter’.

An investigation by the Daily Mail has found that several major hospitals are calling off routine surgery and outpatient appointments as they deal with a surge in virus admissions.

This may have devastating consequences for the almost two million patients who have waited beyond the 18-week target for routine treatment such as cataract operations or hip and knee surgery.

Stephen Powis, national medical director for NHS England, told the Mail on Saturday he was ‘determined’ that routine services should keep running despite the second wave.

The professor said operations must not be cancelled this winter unless ‘absolutely unavoidable’.

Emily Simpson clears up questions about her plans to move to Utah

Emily Simpson clarified that her plans of moving to Utah that she had previously mentioned are far in the future.

Bravo reported that Emily took to her Instagram page to write, “Because you keep asking. The plan is to move back to Utah years from now … not anytime soon.”

Emily’s Utah references

Many fans thought she might have been trading Orange County for the mountainside when she posted a nostalgic throwback picture of herself snuggling a horse last year.

Emily described her previous life in Utah on the post.

“I woke up every morning to the view of Utah mountains and I rode horses almost every day,” she captioned a throwback picture of herself kissing a horse.

Emily also explained that riding horses was more than just a recreational activity for her. She explained the positive effect the horses had on her emotionally.

“I found horseback riding to be so therapeutic when I was dealing with lots of trauma and pain from so many losses,” she continued. “Animals have a way of helping you see your way out of the darkness. Animals have such an amazing intuitive healing power.”

  • Real Housewives of Orange County star Tamra Judge reveals RHOC return on Instagram: Fans react

At the end of the post, she teased that she wanted to revive some habits from her Utah days.

“Riding always brought me lots of peace and calm… I should probably get back to it ASAP,” she added.

Many fans agreed with her at the time, saying should get back to her horse-riding roots.

Additionally, in September 2019, Emily told fans that she and her family plan on moving to Utah.

“If you could live anywhere in the U.S. besides Cali, where would you choose?” one fan asked in an Ask Me Anything thread on Instagram.

“We will move back to Utah eventually … I need more land, more space and horses,” Emily replied.

Emily’s family life

Emily currently lives in California with her husband, Shane Simpson, and her three children and two stepchildren.

During RHOC Season 14, Emily and Shane’s marriage teetered on the edge of destruction. Many uncomfortable scenes showed stilted conversations in which neither of them was on the same page.

However, Emily said on the RHOC Season 15 premiere that their marriage is now in a great place. Emily blamed her need for hip surgery as the cause of the fracture in their relationship at the time.

Additionally, Shane was studying for a difficult law exam, which seemed to cause tension in their relationship on the show.

She also recently celebrated successfully shedding 15 pounds on her new diet and workout regimen.

The Real Housewives of Orange County airs Wednesdays at 9/8c on Bravo.

Theme park set up across road from Covid test centre sparks fury

Scream if you want to swab faster! Theme park set up across road from Covid test centre sparks fury (but which one will get more visitors?)

  • The Pleasureland Theme Park was assembled in the car park of the Rioch Arena and opened on Friday night
  • Just yards away from the park across the A444 road is the Judds Lane drive-through Covid-19 testing centre
  • Locals called for the Theme Park to be closed amid rising virus cases in Coventry as it went into Tier 2 today
  • They expressed their disbelief that a theme park could be set up while many cannot visit family and friends

Residents in Coventry have slammed a funfair that has been set up for half-term, just yards away from a major coronavirus testing centre, as the city enters Tier 2 coronavirus restrictions today.

The Pleasureland theme park experience has been assembled in the car park of the Rioch Arena as coronavirus cases continue to rise in the region.

The half-term funfair didn’t look much fun after it opened on Friday, with pictures showing a nearly deserted theme park in the car park of the Ricoh Arena – home to the Wasps Rugby Union team.

Images showed that just yards away – across the A444 – the Judds Lane drive-through Covid-19 testing centre is in operation, with a series of white tents set up in a separate car park.

The testing centre also appears to be empty, however, with little signs of activity in and around the tents as coronavirus cases continue to rise in the region and the country.

Pictures of the theme park showed it empty, but when it opened on Friday night bleak pictures show a trickle of families turning up

Bleak pictures showed a trickle of families turned up when it opened on Friday night when the theme park opened, as residents called for it to close.

Pleasureland opened just hours later the city moved into the high-risk tier two category after a sharp increase in Covid-19 cases.

The infection rate per 100,00 people in the city rose from 165.3 in the week to October 11 to 179.3 in the week to October 18.

Speaking to CoventryLive, Mum-of-two Julie Porter, 39, a library assistant from Coventry, said: ‘I think its bonkers to open a funfair in the current climate – let alone over the road from a testing centre.

‘I can’t go and sit with six friends in a pub after 10pm but I can go and cram onto a ride with complete strangers, it doesn’t make sense.

Social media users meanwhile have called on the funfair to close immediately amid the rising cases, pointing out the absurdity of opening a theme park during the crisis.

Owner Tommy Wilson said: ‘We are one of the safest fairs in the country, our cleaning regimes are second to none and we do everything we can to keep our customers safe’

Writing on Facebook, Terri Bowden said: ‘This MUST be shut down as we are going into Tier 2. Too many people are being affected.’

Steven Prew wrote: ‘Tier 3 on its way, sent to Coventry.’

Alan Court wrote: ‘I cannot see my family indoors but I can ride the f***ing ghost train with a load of strangers. Thank you very much.’

Steve Millar wrote: ‘How will a fun fair be allowed when the city is in tier 2. Plus why allow a fun fair that will obviously pose a risk but cancel everything else. It’s an absolute joke.’

Deanne Bowell wrote: ‘I bet there won’t be any social distancing or cleaning of the rides. It’s so weird how rugby can’t have spectators that could easily social distance (outside) may I add but a packed funfair is aloud to operate!’

Ian Titford wrote: ‘Drop the kids at the fair while you pop over for a covid test maybe.’

People on social media reacted in disbelief to the theme park’s existence, with netziens calling on the funfair to close immediately

Writing on Facebook, Terri Bowden said: ‘This MUST be shut down as we are going into Tier 2. Too many people are being affected’

Linda Prestidge wrote: ‘I cant go to see family in their homes but i can go to a funfair with complete strangers. I don’t believe all of the rides will be cleaned throughout the day – cleaning like pubs, restaurants and hairdressers have to do.’

Michelle Millic wrote: ‘Bloody stupid having a fair.’

Carlos Chebworth wrote: ‘Hook a duck is different this year – instead of a goldfish you get COVID.’

The Pleasureland Theme Park experience, which is run by Wilson’s Amusements, will run until November 1

The Pleasureland Theme Park experience, which is run by Wilson’s Amusements, will run until November 1.

Owner Tommy Wilson said: ‘We are one of the safest fairs in the country, our cleaning regimes are second to none and we do everything we can to keep our customers safe.

‘We operate a wrist band policy to keep numbers down, we are running at 60 per cent capacity so social distancing is easier to maintain.

‘I have my children and grandchildren here and I am not going to do anything to jeopardise their health.

‘You are more likely to catch the virus in your local Tesco with lots of people handling the same items and putting them back on shelves.

‘I understand some people are still frightened but we must find a way to keep going.’

Coventry is among a number of other regions in the midlands to go into a Tier 2 lockdown. It entered Tier 2 today along with Stoke, and Slough in the South East

The UK yesterday announced 20,530 more coronavirus cases and the deaths of 224 people but official data suggests the country’s outbreak may finally be slowing down

Greater Manchester moved into the highest alert level, Tier 3, on Friday morning, and Wales introduced its two-week ‘firebreak’ lockdown at 6pm last night.

Coventry, Stoke and Slough entered Tier 2 today, while talks between Westminster and civic leaders in Nottingham over possible Tier 3 restrictions were continuing yesterday.

The UK yesterday announced 20,530 more coronavirus cases and the deaths of 224 people but official data suggests the country’s outbreak may finally be slowing down.

Positive tests are up 31 per cent on last Friday, when there were 15,650, and deaths have surged by 65 per cent in a week.

But Government scientists claimed the crucial R rate has dropped slightly and an array of statistics revealed cases are no longer growing as quickly as they once were, although the epidemic is still growing.

SAGE estimates the reproduction rate for the UK has fallen for the first time in a month, from between 1.3-1.5 to 1.2-1.4. The number – the key measure at the heart of Number 10’s plan to control the virus – must stay below one, or the outbreak will continue to grow.

The NHS test and trace system has come under fire from many corners, with prime minister Boris Johnson even admitting to its shortcomings on Thursday.

Fewer than six in ten close contacts of those who test positive for Covid-19 are being reached by tracers, well below the 80 per cent target.

And figures released Thursday show that only one in seven people receive virus test results within 24 hours, the lowest on record.

The Prime Minister said: ‘I share people’s frustrations and I understand totally why we do need to see faster turnaround times and we do need to improve it.’

Sir Patrick Vallance, the chief scientific adviser, added: ‘It’s undoubtedly the case that test, trace and isolation becomes much more difficult to have an impact once numbers are high.

‘So, it’s much more effective when numbers are low. It’s very clear that there’s room for improvement.’ The figures show that in the week ending October 14, only 15 per cent of those who were tested in the community received their result within 24 hours.

This is down from 32.8 per cent in the previous week and is the lowest since Test and Trace began.

3 tons of cannabis washes up in Spain after speed boat lost £14m cargo

Three tons of cannabis is washed up in Spain after speed boat ferrying the £14 million cargo ran aground in Storm Barbara

  • 90 bales of cannabis resin washed up on Isla Canela beach in southwest Spain
  • Speed boat that ran aground is thought to have been ferrying the drugs
  • The resin was washed in by gale-force winds brought by Storm Barbara
  • Southern Spain is plagued by cannabis smuggling from North Africa

Three tons of cannabis have washed up in Spain after a speed-boat ferrying the £14million cargo ran aground in Storm Barbara.

Nearly 90 bales of cannabis resin washed up on Isla Canela beach near Ayamonte close to Spain’s south-west border with Portugal. Police had to use several vehicles to move them.

A high-speed vessel that had run aground was also seized so forensic experts could go over it for clues.

Officers recovered the drugs on Wednesday after heavy rain and gale-force winds swept through the area, bringing down trees and sinking boats anchored in pleasure ports.

Fisherman help to retrieve the bales of cannabis resin that washed into the river near Isla Canela Beach

Detectives from another police force, the Civil Guard, have now launched an investigation. A few other bales are understood to have been fished out of an arm of the Guadiana River known as the Estero de Canela by locals.

A spokesman for Ayamonte Town Hall confirmed: ‘Local police have intercepted three tons of cannabis resin on Isla Canela beach.

‘The number of bales they recovered totals 86.

‘Civil Guard detectives are investigating. A narco boat with four engines has also been recovered.

‘We’d like to congratulate the officers for their work.’

At the start of February 80 tightly-wrapped bales of cannabis resin weighing the same amount washed up on a beach in Gibraltar in bad weather.

A 36ft high-speed inflatable dinghy was also found on Camp Bay in Gibraltar with extra fuel canisters and food.

The Gibraltar find was valued at the time at £14 million, although one well-placed police source said today the drugs recovered in Spain could have a street value of more than £18million depending on how they were sold.

A fisherman helps to secure the tons of narcotics which washed into the town of Ayamonte

Drug smugglers have been filmed several times in recent years offloading cannabis resin from Morocco on beaches in places like the Costa del Sol and Costa de la Luz further west.

On a number of occasions the drug drops have taken place in broad daylight in front of astonished tourists.

Storm Barbara brought bad weather to Portugal, Spain and France as well as the UK.

In Britain homes and cars were left underwater.

The Civil Guard could not be reached for official comment this afernoon but no arrests are yet thought to have taken place.

The residential tourist area of Isla Canela is separated from the Portuguese Algarve by the Guadiana River.

As well as several miles of white sandy beaches, it is home to apartments, hotels, shopping areas and its own marina and golf course.

Kristin Cavallari Opens Up About Divorce, Lauren Conrad Feud and That Stephen Colletti Pic

“That’s my most-liked photo on Instagram ever. More than my kids. More than anything in my life. That photo with Stephen.”

Kristin Cavallari made her life an open book while promoting her latest cookbook.

During her stop at the “On The List” podcast to talk about “True Comfort,” the entrepreneur dished on the feud with her “Laguna Beach” co-star Lauren Conrad, the viral snap she posted with ex Stephen Colletti and her recent split with Jay Cutler.

Kristin Cavallari Explains Why She Decided to End Very Cavallari Amid Divorce

“It’s interesting because whenever someone’s announcing they’re getting a divorce, like, we didn’t make that decision last night and then all of a sudden put it out there,” said the reality star, who called it quits with Jay in April. “It had been coming for a long time. And so by that point, it was almost, like, a sense of relief. I was just relieved to get it out there and start this next phase of my life.”

“But it’s still very sad and very up and down.”

The pair, who married in 2013, share Camden, eight, Jaxon, six, and Saylor, four.

“It’s been a roller-coaster,” she continued. “I mean, it’s sad when you close a chapter of your life, and Jay and I were together for 10 years and we have three kids together. I will always love Jay in some capacity and so it’s tough.”

While revealing she has no plans to date any time soon, Kristin also put the rumors to rest that she may have rekindled a romance with Stephen, after she posted a picture of them together in August.

Kristin Cavallari Details Divorce from Jay Cutler In First Interview Since Split, 'Relieved' Reality Show Is Over

“I knew it was going to create a little commotion, I didn’t know to what degree,” Kristin recalled about the online uproar.

“That’s my most-liked photo on Instagram ever,” she added. “More than my kids. More than anything in my life. That photo with Stephen. I mean, I think it’s really neat that people are still so invested and it really takes people back to that time.”

Kristin was involved with Stephen when they appeared together on MTV’s “Laguna Beach” back in 2004. The two of them caught up with their other co-stars — Lauren, Lo Bosworth, Talan Torriero and Trey Phillips — during a Zoom reunion recently.

“That’s the first time that we have all been together since high school, since we stopped filming, and so it was really good to see everybody,” she said on the podcast. “And it was fun. We played a drinking game, we answered fan questions and just kind of reminisced about the show and everything. And then we’re all on this group email and afterwards everybody was like, ‘I love you, it was so good to see everybody!'”

Even her past squabbles with Lauren, which sometimes revolved around Stephen, appear to have gone by the wayside.

“That’s all in the past. [We’re] totally fine,” Kristin said of her relationship with Lauren. “I think so much time has passed and what we went through was so silly and it was so high school, I’m pretty sure we’re both over it at this point!”

Sky caught up in row as contestant on Lee Mack's new show has to deny he's got 'Nazi tattoos' on his face

SKY has been caught up in a row after a contestant on Lee Mack's new show had to deny he's got "Nazi tattoos" on his face.

Sky History released a clip from The Chop: Britain's Top Woodworker – which sees ten of "the country's finest carpenters" compete in a series of challenges for the woodworking crown.

The video introduces Darren, with the channel's Twitter account captioning it: "Meet the Woodman, the Bloke-With-All-The-Tattoos or Darren as we like to call him. #TheChop."

Viewers-including comedian Katherine Ryan – claimed they spotted what they took to be Neo-Nazi tattoos on his face and posted on Twitter to denounce the show.

However, David insists that 1988 is the year of his father's death and they are not Nazi tattoos.

According to the Anti-Defamation League, 88 is a white supremacist numerical code for "Heil Hitler".

The website reads: "H is the eighth letter of the alphabet, so 88 = HH = Heil Hitler."

They state it is one of the most common white supremacist symbols.

Above his top lip, Darren has the words "Homegrown" tattooed.

A spokesperson for Sky News told The Sun Online: "Darren’s tattoos denote significant events in his life and have no political or ideological meaning whatsoever. Amongst the various numerical tattoos on his body, 1988 is the year of his father’s death.

"The production team carried out extensive background checks on all the woodworkers taking part in the show, that confirmed Darren has no affiliations or links to racist groups, views or comments. Sky HISTORY is intolerant of racism and all forms of hatred and any use of symbols or numbers is entirely incidental and not meant to cause harm or offence."

Talking ahead of his appearance on the Sky show, Darren said of his inkings: “About ten years ago I saw someone with facial tattoos and started to work with my tattooist on my look.

"I have my daughter on the back of my head and my son on my cheek.

"When some people first meet me they are a bit shocked, admittedly. But they soon warm to me after a few minutes.

"Some people ask for selfies with me. I’ve never had a negative reaction to my tattoos. They are just me."

Fans – including Netflix star and comedian Katherine Ryan – were horrified and claimed the contestant has 'Neo-Nazi tattoos on his face'.

She wrote: "'White men can’t get on TV anymore’…..this one literally has Nazi tattoos on his face and is on TV.'"

Another viewer wrote: "The bloke with the neo nazi tattoos. I thought you were the history channel."

A third added: "Are you for real? The bloke has Nazi tattoos on his face ffs. Sky ‘History’ indeed. Morons. Face with rolling eyes"

In the beginning of the clip, Darren says: "I am patient. To a degree. So if there's gonna be people getting in my way, there might be fireworks."

Then later to presenter Lee Mack, he says: "So I'm known as The Woodman. So I turn up and say, 'I am The Woodman."

Lee then jokes: "I'm not going to lie to you Darren, if you were the bloke in my town, you wouldn't be known as The Woodman. You'd be the bloke with all the tattoos.

"Surely that takes precedence over The Woodman."

The Chop is hosted by comedian Lee Mack, TV presenter Rick Edwards and Master Carpenter William Hardie.

It sees ten contestants compete for the title of Britain's Top Woodworker in Epping Forest.

Police break up lockdown mass orgy in holiday flat as dozens arrive at event advertised as 'crime against public health'

POLICE broke up a mass orgy in a Spanish holiday flat after dozens of people queued up outside to be filmed having sex.

The event, which broke lockdown rules, had been advertised as a "crime against public health," according to reports.

Three organisers of the unlicensed sex event, including controversial porn director Ignacio Allende, have been warned they face heavy fines.

The police operation unfolded on Wednesday evening after filming of the sex party got underway at a fifth-floor studio in Madrid’s San Blas neighbourhood.

Local reports said dozens of men had gathered for the event after being offered the chance of satisfying themselves for free with a small selection of women with prizes for the best performers.

Many eager participants are understood to have been queuing outside the area where the X-rated action was going on in the hope of getting the go-ahead to join in.

LOCKDOWN ORGY

Allende, better known as Torbe, is one of three Spaniards said to have been identified as the trio of organisers and informed they would be receiving fines.

Madrid is currently in a state of emergency mini-lockdown, with restrictions on the number of people who can get together.

There is also a ban on leaving or entering the city unless it is for work or humanitarian reasons.

Torbe spent seven months on remand in prison in 2016 after being arrested on suspicion of crimes including sexual abuse of minors and distribution of child porn.

He has yet to be tried but prosecutors announced recently they would be seeking a seven and a year prison sentence on charges including distribution of child pornography linked to the filming of two minors.

At the start of Spain’s three-month state of emergency in March, eight people were arrested in a Barcelona apartment after being accused of flouting the coronavirus lockdown to organise a drug-fuelled orgy.

Undercover officers tipped off about the sex party were let into the holiday flat by revellers who mistook them for potential orgy participants.

Drugs including cocaine and liquid ecstasy were also seized from the apartment, which had been rented for a week by one of the partygoers.

Local reports at the time said another 20 people were expected at the sex bash, organised as a website launch, before police intervened.

One of the party goers is said to have tipped off detectives after an attack of remorse.
