Rapper Lil Yachty Is the Voice of New 'Saved by the Bell' Theme Song

For the past year, NBC has been teasing Saved by the Bell fans with news about the reboot.

With many of the original cast members on board to return to Bayside, the revival series is setting out to recapture the same vibe as the first one by combining two different eras. Leaving no stone unturned, the network commissioned a remixed theme song courtesy of rapper Lil Yachty.

‘Saved by the Bell’ kicks off on Peacock

Peacock, NBC’s streaming service, is gearing up to release the first season of Saved by the Bell on Nov. 25. Viewers will get reacquainted with A.C. Slater, Lisa Turtle, Jessie Spano, and Zack and Kelly Morris as adults. Bayside High will introduce a new set of teens, one of whom is the child of Zack and Kelly.

According to Deadline, the sitcom will see Mark-Paul Gosselaar’s Zack as the governor of California who catches flak for shutting down underfunded schools. His solution is to route those students to districts with more resources. It’s Bayside High’s clash of the classes in this modern take on privilege and adolescence.

Tiffani Thiessen reprises her role as Kelly, while Lark Voorhees will appear as Lisa, Mario Lopez as Slater, and Elizabeth Berkley Lauren as Jessie. Dustin Diamond is not part of the cast.

Lil Yachty creates ‘Saved by the Bell’ theme

“By the time I grab my books/And I give myself a look/I’m at the corner just in time to see the bus fly by/It’s alright ’cause I’m saved by the bell…” Remember that?

In the interest of reinvention, the show’s old theme song also received a makeover. Lil Yachty, known for his singing style of bubblegum rap, is behind the revamped version.

The 23-year-old Atlanta native recycled the old lyrics and wrapped up his verse with a sprinkle of auto-tune sounds. Peacock shared a video on its YouTube channel that compares the old and new songs.

The original Saved by the Bell theme was created by Scott Gale, who also produced the show’s soundtrack. He told Great Big Story when he first received a call about the new series, he hung up the phone and came up with the song in two minutes.

The network chose his creation and for the rest of show, requested that all the music be rock. Gale shared that one time, he and his team even wrote a rap song.

Fans react to new theme

Though the YouTube video doesn’t have that many views, early birds who wanted to preview the new theme checked it out.

Many of the comments are critical of Lil Yachty’s re-do, with fans calling it “terrible” or “garbage.” One person wrote, “Why not just use the old theme song or an updated version of it that sounds similar? The new one is trash.”

Another added, “They could have tried to make an updated rock version. But the new one sounds cornyyyy.” Others shared this sentinment: “Why is it so terrible?”

Currently, audiences can stream old Saved by the Bell episodes on Peacock for free to catch up before the reboot drops on Nov. 25.

'Shameless': Gallagher Clan Tackles Pandemic in Final Season

Popular dramedy Shameless is coming to an end after 11 seasons, similar to the original UK series. Initially slated to air in the summer of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed filming until September. Therefore, the writers were able to edit the script where they include effects of the novelty virus on the Gallagher clan and southside of Chicago.

Where did ‘Shameless’ season 10 leave off?

During the season finale, beloved couple Mickey and Ian finally tied the knot, which proved no easy task as Mickey’s father gave it his all to make sure they didn’t marry.

However, the Gallaghers banded together in the only way the raucous clan can to guarantee the two walked down the aisle husband and husband. Lip had a difficult time adjusting to Tami coming home from the hospital.

Additionally, she wanted to leave the southside for Milwaulkee, where her family had a house waiting for the new family. However, Lip didn’t want to leave his siblings and rented a spot nearby without telling Tami.

The two eventually got into an argument over it, which ended with Tami threatening to take their son to Milwaukee anyway, resulting in Lip falling off the wagon.

Despite the setbacks, Tami returned by the end of the episode to help him paint the house. Additionally, Kev and V got engaged while Debbie might be arrested for hooking up with the underaged Julie, who is now sleeping with Carl.

When does ‘Shameless’ season 11 premiere?

The trailer for the final season dropped on Nov. 17, giving viewers a first look into what they can expect to see from the hardworking family. For example, a bald and bandana-wearing Kev has reopened the Alibi, and Carl is pursuing his newfound passion for the law as a street cop.

Debbie plans on throwing “the best party ever” and eventually finds herself in bed with a new flame. She also opened a business, Debbie Does Everything, complete with a Rosie the Riveter-inspired logo.

Additionally, Frank has an idea to “make the yards dangerous again,” and Lip seemingly complies by spraypainting “go home gentrifier” on a house. On the other hand, newlyweds Ian and Mickey attempt to address their trust issues but end up getting into a fight at the Alibi that V had to break up.

Fiona, who hasn’t appeared in the series since season 9, could return for one last hurrah. Shameless season 11 premieres Dec. 6 at 9/8c on Showtime.

How ‘Shameless’ incorporates COVID-19

A few weeks before the Shameless season 10 finale, Showtime announced they renewed the highly rated hour-long dramedy for its 11th and final season. Initially supposed to air six months later in the summer of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed filming of the season until September.

Additionally, the writers wanted to include the impact of the novelty virus on the southside of Chicago. Therefore, in a TV Line interview, showrunner John Wells noted the crew went back and edited the script to incorporate effects such as the loss of jobs and “how much tougher it’s gotten for people who are already barely hanging on.”

Due to the show’s focus on satirical underpinnings, Wells found it crucial to have the Gallagher clan face the pandemic. For example, the showrunner noted that “libertarian” Frank is reluctant about wearing masks because he claims he thinks it’s “a little bit of a plot.”

However, it’s unclear if the master manipulator genuinely believes that or if he wants people to buy into his latest scheme. Viewers will have to tune into the final season to find out.

'NCIS' Season 18: Why Did Gibbs Shoot McGee? Don't Expect To Find Out Anytime Soon

NCIS showrunner Steve Binder promised that season 18 would begin with a “big and intense” cold open before the show jumped back to November 2019. On Tuesday, November 17, they delivered on that promise with a shocking scene that featured Gibbs (Mark Harmon) shooting McGee (Sean Murray).

But they didn’t reveal why Gibbs pointed his sniper rifle at a member of his team. Thanks to the pandemic, NCIS has implemented a different storytelling technique this season. Fans wanting answers about why Gibbs shot McGee shouldn’t expect to find out anytime soon.

‘NCIS’ will be time-jumping during season 18

The pandemic forced the NCIS cast and crew to do a lot of things differently this season in order to get the show on the air. The spring production shutdown left season 17 four episodes shy of the season they had planned.

Then they had to wait until September to get back to work on a set with new COVID protocols. CBS also cut their season 18 episode order down to just 16 episodes.

To accommodate this massive schedule change, showrunners made some creative story decisions. Instead of keeping the storyline in real time and having new episodes take place in a COVID world, showrunners decided to jump back and explore an old story thread.

Binder told TVLine that they would stay in a “pre-COVID world for a little while” and explain why Gibbs disappeared without explanation in the season 17 episode “Musical Chairs.”

“We had an episode last year called ‘Musical Chairs,’ where Gibbs disappears from the squad room to go on a mission, and then he shows up at the end of the episode with a black eye,” Binder said. “We are going to pick up Season 18 with that mission that Gibbs was on, back in time.”

The season 18 premiere left some fans confused

As Newsweek explains, NCIS is “playing the long game” this season and using the time jumps as a storytelling device that some fans aren’t used to. In the premiere episode “Sturgeon Season,” they started the season with a cold open dated “March 2020.” They never returned to the events in the scene during the remainder of the episode because they jumped back to November 2019.

One disappointed Twitter fan wrote that the opening scene “had nothing to do with this episode.” Another noted that “nothing in this episode tied to Gibbs shooting McGee in the beginning.”

The reason that fans didn’t find out why Gibbs shot McGee is because NCIS is going to keep that mystery going for at least a few episodes. This storytelling mechanism was very common in AMC’s Breaking Bad. A number of episodes had cold opens with time jumps that teased a slowly-unfolding mystery. Sometimes, fans would have to wait an entire season to find out all of the answers to early cold opens.

‘NCIS’ will enter a ‘post-COVID’ world in this season’s 7th episode

NCIS will eventually reveal why Gibbs shot McGee twice, but it will likely take a while. With Gibbs’ sniper skills, he was obviously not trying to kill his co-worker. So fans are starting to develop different theories.

The rest of the episode was about Gibbs’ and Fornell (Joe Spano) partnering up off the books to bring down the man who supplied drugs to Fornell’s daughter. Some fans are speculating that this causes a problem between Gibbs and McGee.

The logo on the tail of the private jet that McGee attempts to stop looks a lot like the one on the key fob that Fornell found. It’s very possible that Gibbs shooting McGee has something to do with Fornell.

There is also the possibility that fans didn’t see the entire scenario. Creative editing may have covered up that Gibbs was actually shooting at the guy who was shooting at McGee. Or, maybe it’s an elaborate plan for McGee to go undercover.

Whatever the reason, NCIS co-showrunner Frank Cardea says, “The first five episodes take place in the period of [pre-coronavirus]. Episode 6 wraps that up, and episode 7 will bring us up to a post-COVID world.”

New episodes of NCIS air Tuesday nights on CBS.

'Saved by the Bell': Elizabeth Berkley Reveals if She's Spoken To Dustin Diamond

Elizabeth Berkley who will appear in the Saved by the Bell reboot revealed if she’s spoken to Dustin Diamond. She also shared if he will make an appearance in the 2020 show.

“So, I don’t know if he will make an appearance,” she said during the Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen After Show. “We’ll see if there’s another season. Maybe it’s something to explore, and I haven’t talked to him in a long time.”

“Honestly, since I think we finished the show is the last time I actually spoke to him, but not because of anything bad,” Berkley continued. “I mean, he was always nice to me. And he’s had his journey. But really I’ve kept more in touch with Mark-Paul (Gosselaar), Tiffany (Thiessen), Mario (Lopez) and then, from time to time, Lark (Voorhies).”

Berkley also shared that Diamond was the cast member who got into the most trouble with producers.

Dustin Diamond had encounters with the law

Diamond, who played Screech in Saved by the Bell, was arrested in 2014 for stabbing a man in a bar on Christmas Day, CNN reports. Diamond told the court the stabbing culminated in “a night that centers around celebrating peace and love.”

Adding, “I want it to be clear that this situation will be not repeated again.” Plus, the encounter was the “single most terrifying experience of my entire life.” He was sentenced to 120 days in jail and had to pay more than $1,000 in fines. His interaction with the law didn’t end there.

After being released early for good behavior, Diamond returned to jail in 2016 for violating conditions of his probation, Reuters reports. A 2020 social media hoax also claimed that Diamond died in prison. In reality, the actor was no longer in jail and alive.

Mario Lopez interviewed Dustin Diamond after he left prison

Diamond recounted the fight to Mario Lopez, former co-star and host of Extra in 2016. “One of the girl’s friends [Amanda] was talking to sucker-punched my fiancée… she leaned back to me and her face was covered in blood,” Diamond told Lopez. “I opened my pocket knife and said, ‘Let my wife go immediately,’ which worked.”

He said the encounter was not as dramatic as reported. “I had my pocket knife like this,” he said showing Lopez. And the blade was right here and the guy came from around me and grabbed my throat, and so he nicked his arm on the tip of it — it was a Band-Aid, the most expensive Band-Aid I’ve ever bought.”

Diamond wrote a book and Lopez said his former co-star did not paint the cast in a favorable light. Diamond said he hired a ghostwriter who fabricated a slew of information, essentially railroading him.

“Imagine how I feel, I haven’t talked to Marc Paul or Elizabeth or Tiffani in ages, so I can’t imagine what they think,” he said. “And I’m hoping this will clear it up. It wasn’t me, I didn’t write this. I was just as shocked and appalled.”

Saved by the Bell premieres on Peacock on Nov. 25.

Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant Elevate 'The Undoing' Above Its Mundane Reliance on Mystery Mechanisms

The Undoing carries many signature marks of a whodunnit thriller. The Agatha Christie-esque intellectual prowess among the possible culprits is central; Donald Sutherland’s air of superiority drifts in and out of each episode. The cat and mouse play between the cops and their suspects drives the plot and influences the characters’ emotional well-being. And of course, the HBO original depends on the all-too-frequent twists and turns that work to overturn or underscore all the coexisting possibilities.

Yet, what the story lacks in narrative innovation, it makes up for in leading actors who bring nuance and complexity to their characters. Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant paint the needed three-dimensionality on their otherwise bare-canvased, upper-class professionals.

Kidman and Grant star as Grace Fraser and Sachs, respectively. Fraser is a respected New York therapist, while Sachs is a pediatric oncologist. Together, they have one son. Their lives begin to unravel when Sachs finds himself the lead suspect in the homicide of a young woman. The show reveals how Kidman and Grant’s characters handle the accusations, as the latter fights for his freedom (all the while claiming innocence).

Nicole Kidman’s Grace Fraser is relatable despite her often fierce, unattainable depiction

Nicole Kidman’s Grace Fraser manages to handle her predicament with composure whenever the cameras come out. Her face remains stoic — every muscle seized still — as her eyes traverse each winding road to disaster. The character’s resilience, at first, seems far-fetched. However, her doubt behind closed doors, her motherly instinct, and her relationship with her father forge a relatable foundation.

Nicole Kidman can — in one scene — portray the educated and gracious woman who puts fact before feeling. In another, she carries a mother on the brink of mental breakdown — on the cusp of chaos. It’s in the eyes with Kidman. It’s in the subtle mouth movements that indicate uncertainty. It’s in the bits of silence between words that reveal a ponderance in preparation for persuasion. She is wise but not omniscient. She is cautious but sometimes reckless. She is human in a somehow superhuman capacity.

David E. Kelley’s material gets the best out of Kidman; she is at home within his thriller landscape, making for a career-defining moment.

Hugh Grant’s Jonathan, as father and suspect, dodges each presumption he cements

In one moment, Grant’s Jonathan Sachs is a cheating silver fox with a god complex. In another, he’s a compassionate doctor, internalizing each death he cannot prevent.  He’s a father who wants nothing more than to be a hero to his child — he is the fun parent in the household.

Sachs is the man who adores his wife…yet not enough to remain faithful. From crying and pleading his innocence to asking Grace’s father for money to clear his personal debts, he shifts in and out of likeability. His performance is nuanced in that he subtly evades each negative presumption concerning his character. Yet, he never fully “gets off the hook.”

Jonathan keeps viewers guessing, and Grant captures the character with accuracy — he never wavers too far to villainy or victimhood. Rather, he walks the tightrope that exists between the two, keeping his true colors always just out of arm’s reach.

‘NCIS’: Why Gibbs Is Afraid to Retire

One question many NCIS fans have is when Gibbs is going to retire. Some want to know why he hasn’t stepped away from the job yet. What’s holding him back? Sure, he loves his job, but it’s much deeper than that. Here’s what Gibbs once said about why he hasn’t handed in his badge and gun.

How will Gibbs know it’s time to retire?

Gibbs will know it’s time to make his exit when he doesn’t have anything left to achieve. Alex Azoury, founder and CEO of Home Grounds, tells Showbiz Cheat Sheet when you feel like there’s nothing more to learn or do in your career, it might be time to move on.

“The number one sign it is time to retire is when you feel like you have no more upward mobility, or no desire for it. You feel you have learned all you care to about your field, and that your best work is behind you.”

Why Gibbs is afraid to retire

During a conversation with his therapist, Dr. Grace Confalone (Laura San Giacomo) in season 16, episode 23 (titled “Lost Time”), she asks him when he plans to retire, and he says he doesn’t have plans to leave. “I’m worried about what I’d do without what I do,” Gibbs told Grace. He’s fearful that he will leave his job and then he won’t have anything left.

Gibbs’ wife Shannon and daughter Kelly are dead, he has a trail of ex-wives, and he mostly keeps to himself, so there’s not much left for Gibbs after he retires. His job at NCIS is what keeps him going. Gibbs’ identity is tied to his job and it gives him a sense of purpose. Without work, he would feel lost and alone.

Gibbs after retirement

What would Gibbs even do after retirement? If he decides to leave, he will need to figure out what to do next. Otherwise, he will likely get depressed and bored. He needs a reason to get out of bed each day.

“It’s helpful to think about what you would be retiring to not just what you’re retiring from,” said Jerry Cahn, CEO and CLO of Age Brilliantly. “Retirement, without a plan, can be more difficult than you think. It can seem wonderful during the early ‘honeymoon’ stage, but then boredom, disillusionment, isolation or depression can set in.”

What’s next for Gibbs

The next time we see Gibbs will be NCIS Season 18. We’ll learn more about the psychology of Gibbs as well as how he met Ducky. The executive producers of the show say viewers will get a deeper look at each of the characters and find out more about their personal lives.

Paola moved to Miami to start a career in modeling. Along the way, she started a family with Russ, and they had a son named Axel.

Is Paola Mayfield pursuing a new career?

Paola is a personal trainer as well as a fitness coach, according to Instagram. She’s also a Zumba instructor, meaning she’s really broadened her horizons since her first appearance on the series. It looks like Paola is branching out even more now into new fields.

According to Soap Dirt, it appears the celebrity was found in a studio, and she may be recording. Back in October, she posted herself with headphones on in front of a microphone. “Say what??” she captioned the post on Instagram. Even more recently, she posted an image with two guys in what could be a studio on Instagram as well. It looks like something is definitely going on, and Paola has big things planned.

Could she be releasing new music? Although she hasn’t announced the details, fans are hoping to get the full scoop on the matter very soon. Even Paola’s husband, Russ, posted an image on his Instagram alongside his wife in what looks like a recording studio. “Something is coming 🎧,” he captioned the post.

Fans speculate about what’s up

Obviously, fans want to know what’s going on, and they seem pretty convinced that Paola is working on recording music. In her post in the recording studio, fans comment with their thoughts on what’s up.

“Eso! Can’t wait! 🔥🔥🔥,” a fan wrote on the post.

Another fan wonders if she’s making music now. “You make music? Nice,” they said.

'Supernatural' Penultimate Episode: Here's Who Is Probably at That Church

Take time to digest the heartbreaking details of Supernatural’s latest episode before considering how the rest of this apocalypse will play out. Only TWO more episodes of the series remain before fans bid farewell to the Winchester clan. It’s officially time to break out the tissues.

After episode 18 aired, a brief trailer showed where the brothers are headed next. They are not giving up this fight with Chuck. Who’s on their side? Here’s one theory about who is waiting for the boys in the penultimate episode.

[Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for Supernatural, Season 15 episode 18]

‘Supernatural’ episode 19 trailer showed church scene

At this point, viewers know that people have been wiped off the planet thanks to Chuck’s diabolical Thanos-like moves. Save for a dog, it doesn’t seem like there’s any life anywhere else. Hopefully, the dog isn’t Chuck in disguise.

In the preview for episode 19, the Winchesters and Jack are shown approaching a church. There are lights on inside and it’s obvious there will be someone from the past. Is the church a refuge or a workshop? Whoever it is, they are coming to help the gang beat Chuck.

It’s likely an angel coming in to help

Remember when Sam and Dean had that awkward, emotional reunion with their other brother, Adam Milligan?

It was eons ago (January to be exact), but Adam, who’s a vessel for archangel Michael, was conflicted about his place in the world and in the Winchesters’ lives. Michael also had deep-seated daddy issues that needed to be addressed.

No one knows if the archangel ever spoke to God or if he decided he’s now Team Winchester because of all the destruction. The last time fans saw Michael/Adam, he opened the portal to Purgatory so Dean and Cas could retrieve a Leviathan blossom.

Although Chuck could be directly responsible for Michael’s return earlier this season, there’s also the fact that Dean is his vessel too. These factors may spell trouble for Chuckie.

To back this theory up, Jake Abel—the actor who plays Adam—said during an interview with TV Insider that he felt his character had unfinished business.

“It felt so incomplete, and for me, that says that the story isn’t complete yet. I don’t know where they go or what they do, but if there’s one thing we know about Supernatural, it’s life tends to intervene in characters’ lives, even if they want to get away from something,” said Abel.

More tears are guaranteed

There’s a feeling that the Winchesters will see Bobby, Donna, and Charlie before the series signs off for good because this apocalypse isn’t exactly set in stone. Someone must repopulate Earth, right?

Though it is unlikely that viewers will see old fan favorites like Crowley, Rowena, Gabriel, or the ill-fated Kevin Tran again, it is a given that the last two episodes of Supernatural will hit where it hurts.

We just saw that in “Despair,” but the reality of finality makes it different this time. Tune in for the penultimate episode on Nov. 12 at 8 p.m. EST.

'The Family Chantel': Angenette Reveals Why Royal Might Think She Had Been Unfaithful

In season 2 of The Family Chantel, there is some major drama going on, as can be expected. There are some new faces in the mix, including Chantel Everett’s brother, Royal, and his new wife, Angenette. However, Royal has made some moves that make Chantel think he’s “controlling” with Angenette. This week, Chantel tells Angenette that it’s like her brother doesn’t “trust” her.

Later on with a producer, Angenette reveals why Royal might think she had been unfaithful in the past.

Chantel Everett’s brother has a new wife

Angenette is from the Philippines, and she met Royal online after she added him on Facebook. Chantel’s brother traveled to see her, where he proposed on his first trip over. They used the K-1 visa process to get her to the United States, and although they had 90 days to tie the knot, they got married a week after Angenette arrived.

Chantel actually has reservations about Angenette, including the age difference that separates the couple. Royal is 32 and his wife is 23. Chantel also finds Angenette to be “quiet” and reserved, and unlike the women Royal has dated before.

When Chantel takes Angenette out to a club with her friends and sister Winter, they try to have a good time involving dancing and drinks. However, Royal actually shows up to get his wife, and he takes her home.

“It seems like Royal feels like he needs to keep a close watch on Angenette,” Chantel says to the cameras. She also reveals that Royal told her that when the couple was first together, Angenette was “romantically messaging other guys that were also in America,” according to Chantel.

Angenette reveals why Royal might think she had been unfaithful

This week, Angenette goes shopping for wedding dresses with Chantel and her mother, Karen. At one point, Chantel asks some questions, including how the couple met, even though that’s already been established. She even asks if Angenette has spoken to other American men before, and she says she hasn’t, but Chantel has said before that Royal already told her she had.

Next, Chantel asks if Angenette asked Royal why he picked her up at the club the other night. She says he wanted to get her because it was “really late.” Then, Chantel says she feels “like maybe Royal doesn’t trust” Angenette “enough.” Angnette reveals that he “needs to trust” her, and she isn’t “doing anything bad.”

Angenette talks to producers about the conversation, and tells the cameras she “isn’t hiding anything from them.” A producer asks Angenette if she thinks Royal “trusts” her. She says she thinks he “trusts” her “enough.” When asked what that means, Angenette isn’t immediately upfront about it. She starts to cry, then a producer asks if “sometimes” royal doesn’t trust her, and she admits that “sometimes he doesn’t.”

She’s then asked if she has anything more to say, and she says, “Maybe I can tell it to you, but I don’t want him to look bad.”

Angenette tells a producer what happened, and she reveals why Royal might think she had been unfaithful. It turns out she had been pregnant, but had a miscarriage, and she claims Royal mentioned she might have gotten with someone else in the Philippines before coming to the United States.

“I had a miscarriage,” Angenette reveals. “We went to the hospital, and then we found out that maybe I am two weeks pregnant. And then he doubted it.” When asked if he maybe thought she was “fooling around,” Angenette said: “He said that maybe I hook up another guy in the Philippines before I went here.”

It’s an extremely emotional situation and a hard thing for her to go through. Where do thing go from here for Angenette and Royal? We’ll have to wait and see.

M*A*S*H': A Famous Kiss Scene Was Worth $450K

M*A*S*H was more than just a great sitcom. It also helped redefine what a TV show was capable of. It introduced mature themes and tough subjects, all while doing so with hilarious jokes along the way.

Like many shows throughout TV history, M*A*S*H featured plenty of romance. The show even featured a prominent romantic storyline between two of the show’s most popular characters that ended in a very profitable kiss for the show and the network. Let’s take a look back at M*A*S*H‘s famous kiss scene that ended up being worth over $450,000.

Who were Hawkeye Pierce and “Hot Lips” Houlihan?

Two of the show’s most beloved characters were Hawkeye Pierce (Alan Alda) and Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan (Loretta Swit). Both characters were featured in the film and the original movie, but both were somewhat different in the sitcom.

In the show, Pierce and Houlihan develop a much more tight-knit relationship. They become friends and even develop something of a “will they or won’t they?” chemistry that fans loved. While the two never end up in a relationship, they did have one episode of the show in which they slept together.

Fans of the show loved both characters and enjoyed seeing their witty, back and forth banter. It was something of a revolutionary move for a sitcom of its time.

Most great male-female relationships on shows before this were husband and wife teams. This one was two people who weren’t involved in a committed relationship. Before there were Ross and Rachel or Jerry and Elaine, there was Hawkeye and Hot Lips.

The M*A*S*H series finale

M*A*S*H was such a popular show that it had one of the most anticipated series finales of all time. It lived up to the hype: critics have called it one of the greatest finales in TV history.

According to Yahoo, in terms of viewers, the M*A*S*H finale remains to this day as the most-watched show of all time. Over 121 million viewers tuned in to watch the beloved cast get sent home from Korea.

To put this into proper context, consider two other acclaimed sitcoms and their finales. In 1998, Seinfeld’s finale managed “only” 76 million viewers while the similarly popular predecessor Cheers had 84 million. With the fragmenting of TV viewing over the past few decades, it’s highly unlikely one show will ever net this many viewers at once ever again.

Simply put, M*A*S*H‘s finale achieved rating numbers that will never be equaled.

Alda commented following the finale that it actually led to a plumbing issue in a major metropolitan area:

“…the next day, the papers said that so many people had flushed their toilets at the same moment during the commercials that the New York City water supply was seriously in trouble.”

There was one part of the finale fans were looking forward to in particular: the resolution of the Hawkeye and Hot Lips relationship.

M*A*S*H’s $450K kiss scene

When everyone tuned in to the show’s last episode, they wanted to see how Hawkeye and Hot Lips would leave things. The fans looking for that payoff received it: the two shared a kiss.

The kiss was more than just a fitting send-off for two characters who had spent years developing together. It also became a huge profit center for the network.

A TV ad during this finale cost $450,000. That means that an ad aired adjacent to the kiss was making nearly half of $1,000,000. Without a doubt, that confirms Alda’s retort that it was “one of the costliest kisses in TV history.”

It was a big moment in a finale full of them, and the advertising dollars associated with it reflected that.
