'Shameless': Gallagher Clan Tackles Pandemic in Final Season

Popular dramedy Shameless is coming to an end after 11 seasons, similar to the original UK series. Initially slated to air in the summer of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed filming until September. Therefore, the writers were able to edit the script where they include effects of the novelty virus on the Gallagher clan and southside of Chicago.

Where did ‘Shameless’ season 10 leave off?

During the season finale, beloved couple Mickey and Ian finally tied the knot, which proved no easy task as Mickey’s father gave it his all to make sure they didn’t marry.

However, the Gallaghers banded together in the only way the raucous clan can to guarantee the two walked down the aisle husband and husband. Lip had a difficult time adjusting to Tami coming home from the hospital.

Additionally, she wanted to leave the southside for Milwaulkee, where her family had a house waiting for the new family. However, Lip didn’t want to leave his siblings and rented a spot nearby without telling Tami.

The two eventually got into an argument over it, which ended with Tami threatening to take their son to Milwaukee anyway, resulting in Lip falling off the wagon.

Despite the setbacks, Tami returned by the end of the episode to help him paint the house. Additionally, Kev and V got engaged while Debbie might be arrested for hooking up with the underaged Julie, who is now sleeping with Carl.

When does ‘Shameless’ season 11 premiere?

The trailer for the final season dropped on Nov. 17, giving viewers a first look into what they can expect to see from the hardworking family. For example, a bald and bandana-wearing Kev has reopened the Alibi, and Carl is pursuing his newfound passion for the law as a street cop.

Debbie plans on throwing “the best party ever” and eventually finds herself in bed with a new flame. She also opened a business, Debbie Does Everything, complete with a Rosie the Riveter-inspired logo.

Additionally, Frank has an idea to “make the yards dangerous again,” and Lip seemingly complies by spraypainting “go home gentrifier” on a house. On the other hand, newlyweds Ian and Mickey attempt to address their trust issues but end up getting into a fight at the Alibi that V had to break up.

Fiona, who hasn’t appeared in the series since season 9, could return for one last hurrah. Shameless season 11 premieres Dec. 6 at 9/8c on Showtime.

How ‘Shameless’ incorporates COVID-19

A few weeks before the Shameless season 10 finale, Showtime announced they renewed the highly rated hour-long dramedy for its 11th and final season. Initially supposed to air six months later in the summer of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed filming of the season until September.

Additionally, the writers wanted to include the impact of the novelty virus on the southside of Chicago. Therefore, in a TV Line interview, showrunner John Wells noted the crew went back and edited the script to incorporate effects such as the loss of jobs and “how much tougher it’s gotten for people who are already barely hanging on.”

Due to the show’s focus on satirical underpinnings, Wells found it crucial to have the Gallagher clan face the pandemic. For example, the showrunner noted that “libertarian” Frank is reluctant about wearing masks because he claims he thinks it’s “a little bit of a plot.”

However, it’s unclear if the master manipulator genuinely believes that or if he wants people to buy into his latest scheme. Viewers will have to tune into the final season to find out.

The 38-year-old actor, who played Philip 'Lip' Gallagher in the Channel 4 series, has a cosmetics empire he says is worth £18million.

He said: "I live in a two-bed flat and drive a modest car. I’m pumping everything back into the company.

'Shameless' Season 11 Receives 2020 Premiere Date

Season 10 of Shameless marked its first run without Fiona, making Debbie the de facto head of the Gallagher household instead. Though she demonstrated moments of decent leadership, she also epitomized the family’s morally sketchy brand with her antics.

On a brighter note, Gallavich fans finally witnessed Ian and Mickey’s wedding—and all of its obstacles—in the season finale with most of the Gallaghers on hand for the occasion. After news broke that the upcoming installment of the show would be the last, viewers waited for a start date. Showtime just delivered.

‘Shameless’ Season 11 coming this winter

Initially, season 11 was supposed to debut this past summer, but like many other shows, Shameless’ production schedule was shuffled around. Deadline reported that filming began on Sept. 8 for the series’ final season, and Showtime just revealed the Shameless series finale premiere date: Dec. 6.

On Twitter, the announcement says to “Bring your own tp,” while the Shameless Instagram account flat out tells fans, “Don’t be sh*tty. 🧻 Roll up to the #Shameless FINAL SEASON December 6 on @SHOWTIME. RSVP ASAP.”

Fans expressed their excitement with toilet paper emojis on Instagram and Twitter, and Emma Kenney even jumped in to ask whose hand is in the clip.

It sounds like Lip to us, but plenty want to know if Fiona is coming back for one last hurrah too. In the Instagram comment section, some fans are asking for a Christmas-themed reunion with her, Jimmy, and the rest of the family.

Season 11 to feature COVID-19 storyline

Imagine Frank Gallagher in the middle of a pandemic. Shameless showrunner John Wells said his writing team reworked the scripts for season 11 to address coronavirus for the story and for safety purposes on set.

In June, he told The Hollywood Reporter that the show will explore the crisis’ impact on the South Side and some of the Gallaghers will come down with the virus.

“It’s impossible to do a satirical comedy about the working poor without addressing what happened and what is going to happen to that community,” Wells said. “The challenge, of course, is making it feel funny because there’s not much that’s funny about it.”

What’s known about ‘Shameless’ Season 11

Wells has said in multiple interviews that they’d love for Emmy Rossum to join the cast in saying goodbye to the show, and they’ve spoken to her. Much of that depends on her schedule but fans can definitely hold out hope.

Back in January, he told THR there would be a slight time jump in the final season. With that in mind, Debbie will be a registered sex offender who has to drop her daughter off 100 feet away from the school’s entrance. Whether the story will dive into the specifics of that case (and Carl’s involvement with the girl) remains to be seen.

Frank’s past will catch up to him again and Mickey’s dad is not letting up, even after the wedding. Lip’s journey will be central to the series’ family theme and he’ll be navigating his various sets of loyalties to Tami and the Gallagher clan. Get ready to tune in on Dec. 6.

Shameless' 11th and Final Season Premiere Date Is Revealed

Shameless fans, mark your calendars!

On Tuesday, Showtime announced the premiere date for the show's 11th and final season: It will return on Sunday, Dec. 6, at 9 p.m. ET.

The Paul Abbott-created series, which first premiered in winter 2011 and is an adaptation of a British show, is Showtime's longest-running show and no. 1 comedy. Its upcoming premiere comes almost a year after the season 10 finale aired on Jan. 26.

It stars William H. Macy, Jeremy Allen White, Shanola Hampton, Ethan Cutkosky, Steve Howey, Emma Kenney, Noel Fisher, Kate Miner, Cameron Monaghan and Christian Isaiah.

When season 11 returns, viewers will find the "Gallagher family and the South Side at a crossroads, with changes caused by the COVID pandemic, gentrification and aging to reconcile," according to a press release. "As Frank (Macy) confronts his own mortality and family ties in his alcoholic and drug induced twilight years, Lip (White) struggles with the prospect of becoming the family’s new patriarch."

"Newlyweds Ian (Monaghan) and Mickey (Fisher) are figuring out the rules and responsibilities of being in a committed relationship while Deb (Kenney) embraces her individuality and single motherhood. Carl (Cutkosky) finds an unlikely new career in law enforcement and Kevin (Steve Howey) and V (Hampton) struggle to decide whether a hard life on the South Side is worth fighting for," it continues.

News of the show's final season was announced in January, which came almost a year and a half after Emmy Rossum, who starred as Fiona Gallagher, announced her departure after nine seasons.

“It’s hard thing to put into words, feelings,” she wrote in a lengthy Facebook post at the time. “But I’m going to try. This business is always an adventure, full of travel and opportunities to tell stories. Usually as an actor, every few months, you travel to a new place, start a new project, build a new character, learn new rhythms, new inside jokes with your crew, make new friends.”

“Until ‘Shameless’ came into my life 8 years ago, I led that kind of transient wonderful life of an actor. And I never realized how much I actually craved the kind of continuity that this show has given me. And given all of us in the crew. Season after season I’m amazed that our same crew comes back. And it’s not just because it’s a wonderfully written, wonderfully layered show. There are these real connections, real friendships that bring us back season after season after season,” she added. “See, in real life, unlike Fiona, I’m an only child. I never had a big family. Being ensconced in that messy Gallagher family love is something I’d always dreamed of. But even off set, it feels real. We’ve watched the kids grow up into the strong, talented, independent human beings that they are.”

In 2016, Rossum, 34, made headlines when she refused to sign on for the Showtime drama’s eighth season unless she was offered more than Macy, 70, to make up for the seven years she was paid significantly less. Days later, the Golden Globe-nominated actress and Warner Bros. came to terms on a new contract.

As to whether Rossum will return for the series finale?

“I’ll certainly ask her,” showrunner John Wells told Entertainment Weekly in January. “She’s very busy and she does a lot of other things. We all love each other and we’ve been through wonderful things together, so I’ll ask her and hopefully, she’ll be available at the time that we do it.”

“But we’re so far from knowing what that would be and when that would be, and she’s just started on her new project for the Peacock, Angelyne, so I’m going to leave her to that for quite some time … until I start bugging her.”
